Opening up my style and technique

Things have been good lately on the music front. I have been working real hard experimenting with new apps, sounds and synthesis techniques, but also I have been freeing myself from the tempo and fixed genre thing. I now just make what I feel no matter what tempo or style, if I feel like making it on the day I do it. I love all types of music and don’t like being pigeon holed in any style. I am going to use the J-Tek label to be more experimental and want to offer more as an artist. In the coming months I am going to redesign the Dto website and make it a solid hub for real talent. Watch this space for updates on what’s going down.

J-Records Ning Network is shut down

I am sorry to inform you guys but our J-Tek Records social network that was set up on Ning has been shut down due to lack of donations and that the Ning Network has changed their policy and started to charge even for the basic plan.
I would like to say sorry to all the people that joined the site and thanks for the support, but we are unable to fund this ourselves as we have to many other outgoings which are higher priority.
On a good note though we are developing a new J-Tek Records site which will have it’s own members area, so watch this space.

Free J-Tek Dub to Download

I am offering a free download of one of my unreleased tracks titled Sooth My Soul. The track was made about four years ago, but was never finished for some reason.
Anyway I just thought I would offer this to the people who have been supporting J-Tek over the past few years to say thanks.

You can download it from our Soundcloud page http://soundcloud.com/j-tek-records

If you like the track, or don’t like it, please leave a comment as it would be good to hear your feedback.

Thanks again for the support.

Four Seven Deleter album update

Well people August has been a crazy month, been on holiday, spent a lot of time with my family, and been trying to keep fit as well. I was hoping to have my album finished by September, but it now looks like it will be delayed by a couple of months. Not to worry though, I am not rushing it, these things come together in their own time.
I am now about 9 tracks deep, with 6 or 7 good patterns that need finishing. I am going to mix the album at the end, then go through the track selection and order a playlist. There are a few tracks that I want to put on J-Tek Records as well, but taking my time as I want J-Tek 13 to be tight.
Watch this space for more info, clips coming soon.

Modular on Twitter

I have been using Twitter now for a little while but I don’t really know what to do with it or what it’s for. To be honest I am a fan of Myspace, but everyone has jumped ship to Facebook or Twitter. Anyway I will give it a go. To follow me on Twitter, my username is djmodular.

Nano Studio on the iphone

My brother showed me a great little app the other day for making music on the iPhone. It is called Nano Studio by Blip Interactive and it is a available in the app store for about 9 pound. I have been having a little play around with it today and managed to transfer sounds from my computer to the app. I knocked up a few 808 beats and a little bline and I must say I am very impressed by what it can do. I will be using it to write little patterns on the go and then transfer them back to Ableton or Reaper to finish them off.

Anyway check it out at www.blipinteractive.co.uk

Album is taking shape

I am going to start updating this blog more from today. You will have to forgive me for any bad grammar or spelling mistakes as I will be writing most of these posts on the go from my iPhone and if I worry to much about that I will never get anything up here.

Anyway just to let you know it’s been a great year. I have been working hard on my album Four Seven Deleter which is starting to take shape. I am about 8 tracks deep now and have also got loads of other patterns that I am going to turn into finished tracks. I have been learning a new DAW called Reaper, so things have been a little slow off the ground, but now I have got the workflow sorted things are starting to come together.
The album is going to be a mixed bag of everything that has influenced me over the years and the tempos are everything from 80bpm to 175bpm.
I have just started sending a few of the tracks out to Dj’s and so far I have been getting a good response.

I will post a few clips on Soundcloud and Myspace soon, so watch this space.

Check out Reaper by Cockos

ReaperOver the past few months I have been learning a new DAW called Reaper which is developed by Cockos. The Reason I have made the switch is because I am sick of giving my money to these half assed music tech companies that don’t even listen to their customers. I own a copy of Logic and Pro Tools, but recently I have been searching for an app that suits all my production needs. I also wanted an DAW that has a sense of community. This is where Reaper comes in! I have been using it now for over 2 months and have started to write my new album in it and have been amazed by it’s features and CPU efficiency. Also what really got me excited about Reaper was the price…

Working on my first album

If anyone has noticed that I have gone underground for a while it’s because I am working on my first album. Having spent more than 15 years producing music across many genres, I thought it was apt time to focus on an album project. The album will be titled Four Seven Deleter inspired by a robot character created by my son. Anyway watch this space as I will be uploading some clips in the coming months.
